Furthermore, the sheer density of the curriculum forces teachers to rush through the second half of the 20th century, leaving little time to discuss the environmental crisis, the rise of China, or the nuances of post-colonial Africa. A good teacher, therefore, must use the textbook not as a cage, but as a trampoline—jumping off from its summaries into deeper debates.
