In September 2004, riding high from the massive success of Californication (1999) and By the Way (2002), the band reunited with legendary producer Rick Rubin. This partnership had previously birthed their breakthrough Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991), and to recapture that magic, they returned to where it all started: Rubin's Laurel Canyon estate, a gothic mansion famously known as "The Mansion".
