Prayers and rituals, when performed with understanding, feeling, and concentration, become a powerful tool in the process of religious awareness. Prayers and rituals are what distinguishes religion from mere philosophy. The purpose of prayers and rituals is to generate a conscious awareness which, in turn, provides the devout an insight into and an understanding of the nature of Divinity. Prayers and rituals also provide a medium through which one is able to relate and bridge himself to the unseen spiritual world.

The film does not shy away from the discomfort of this tradition, portraying it as a deeply complex and dehumanizing practice. One central conflict in the movie is the British law that strictly forbids any colonial officer from marrying his "dictionary," a rule that carries the threat of execution, placing the characters in an impossible position between love and duty. By setting its forbidden romance against this authentic historical backdrop, the film raises questions about power, tradition, and the very nature of love in a deeply unequal relationship.

Critical reception was mixed. The film holds a modest rating and is often described as a "straight-to-video romantic drama". One reviewer noted, "The Sleeping Dictionary has behind it a great story, a solid cast, and very attractive visuals," while another called it a "Novocain romance for fifty bucks that, while harmless in its trajectory, has little chance of leaving a lasting impression". It remains a cult favorite among fans of romantic dramas set against exotic backdrops, largely due to the chemistry between its leads. Check audience and critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes
