The series opens with a haunting prologue. King Shantanu of Hastinapur falls in love with Ganga, the goddess of the river. She agrees to marry him but imposes a strange condition: he must never question her actions. One by one, Ganga drowns their seven newborn sons. Overwhelmed with grief, Shantanu breaks his promise. Enraged, Ganga reveals she was liberating the eight Vasus from a curse, but since he broke his word, she leaves, taking their eighth son, Devavrata (later Bhishma), with her.
