Yearning to learn the perfumer's art, he delivers leather to the shop of Giuseppe Baldini (Hoffman) and immediately impresses the old master with his prodigious talent. Baldini buys him from the tannery and teaches him the principles of scent. Grenouille quickly surpasses his teacher, but he is frustrated to learn that the traditional methods of distillation cannot capture the smells of all objects—namely, the scent of a person. Baldini sends him to the perfume capital of the world, Grasse, to learn the ancient art of enfleurage, a method that can extract the most delicate essences.
